I enjoy engraving for pleasure and for exhibitions, and working in black and white is an exciting contrast all the colour in the giftware illustrations. I am fascinated by perspective, and I also look for pattern and texture in a subject. Mountaineering and travel have provided endless inspiration for future work.
Born in 1958 and brought up in the Medway Towns, Kent, I studied for my foundation year at Chelsea School of Art, then gained a BA Hons in Illustration at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, where I became interested in Lino-cutting, influenced by John Lawrence. I went on to the Royal College of Art where I was taught wood- engraving by Yvonne Skargon. In 1983 I began a career as a freelance illustrator with a commission from the Folio Society to produce 33 engravings for Sir Walter Scott's "Bride of Lammermoor". In 1984 I was invited to be a member of The Society of Wood Engravers and given the opportunity to exhibit my prints. I have contributed engravings for other Folio Society projects: an engraving of the procession of pilgrims for the Canterbury Tales; and three engravings for Henry vi in their 1986 Shakespeare. I also enjoy drawing in pen and ink.
